Occasionally, I'll select one of Bouguereau's paintings to paint as a study. It is always a learning experience because he employed traditional methods of working up a painting. These included detailed pencil studies and oil sketches, and his careful method resulted in a pleasing and accurate rendering of the human form. Particularly admired was his painting of skin, hands, and feet. In his own time, William-Adolphe Bouguereau (November 30, 1825 - August 19, 1905) was considered to be one of the greatest painters in the world by the Academic art community, but later fell out of favor as the Impressionists gained acceptance. However, a renewed interest in his work started in 1997, and continues today as over 100 museums worldwide exhibit his work.
