On and off for about a week, this bird appeared in the early morning hours around the same time, perched on the same newel post on our deck overlooking the marsh.  The first thing that came to mind was the well-known proverb that refers back to medieval falconry where "a bird in the hand" (the falcon- a valuable asset) was "worth more than two in the bush (the prey).  The definition inferring that what you already have is more valuable than the prospect to have something greater.  Perhaps something to think about.

The more times this bird appeared, the more I thought about how he's got a really good view of what's going on out there.  He's literally "on the ball" and could be assessing the situation, as is the lookout on a ship - or in life.  As the watchkeeper, everyone off-watch is counting on him.

" It is for the watchkeeper to understand the limitations of what is available to them and decide what means they must use to properly determine the risk of collision." - Vishal Khosla
